NEW YORK CITY CONFERENCE EXAMINES THE ROLE OF LAW SCHOOLS IN ADDRESSING ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION
Over 140 individuals from 24 states and 36 law schools registered to attend the conference"Meeting Our Responsibilities: Substance Abuse and Law Schools" held on Tuesday, June 24 in New York City.
Keynote Speakers included the Honorable Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge, New York State Court of Appeals, and Joseph Bellacosa, Dean of St. John's Law School (and former New York State Court of Appeals Judge). Distinguished panelists included: James C. Moore (NYS Lawyer Assistance Trust Chair); Robert Stein (ABA Executive Director); John Sebert (ABA Legal Education Consultant); Hon. Robert Childers (ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs member); W. David Harmon (Director, Counseling Center, St. John's University); Robert Muldoon (Board of Bar Examiners, Massachusetts); Michael Cohen (Director, Florida Lawyer Assistance Program); Martha Treese (New Jersey Character Committee); Hannah Arterian (Dean, Syracuse Law School); Robert Davis (Adjunct Professor, Widener Law School); Frank Shih (Assistant Dean of Students, CUNY Law School); Aviva Orenstein (Visiting Professor of Law, Cardozo Law School); Ken Rosenblum (Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Touro Law Center); Mark Byers (Director, Office of Student Life Counseling, Harvard Law School) and Ray Lopez (NYS Bar Association Lawyer Assistance Program Director).

As a followup to the conference, the Trust has been working on various initiatives. • We have recommended that each law school designate a "Student LAP" representative, to be trained by the New York State Bar Association Lawyer Assistance Program, to serve as a non-site contact point for law school students. • We have retained Touro Law School Professor Marjorie Silver to assemble materials to form a core curriculum, the so-called "Course in a Box," to facilitate the presentation of relevant information by law schools. • We have created a videotape of extracts of remarks from our conference to serve as a starting point for discussion. • We have organized an upstate meeting of law school student services professionals to further promote the schools' development of assistance and information concerning this issue.
