Character & Fitness
Law graduates who have passed the bar examination
must complete the character and fitness review before
admission to the bar.
The question related to our interest that
New York asks is:
"State whether you have . . .
any mental or emotional condition or substance abuse problem
that could adversely affect your capability to practice
law? ___ Are you currently using any illegal drugs? ___
. . .If your answer is "yes" to any . . .question.
. .state the facts as fully as possible. If applicable,
provide the name and locality of the court or agency,
the approximate date of the action or proceeding, and
the judgment or other disposition."
Students who have a condition or problem
to be reported would be well advised to contact the Lawyer
Assistance Program of the New York State Bar Association
[(800) 255-0569] or the Association of the Bar of the
City of New York [(212) 302-5787] prior to the character
and fitness application process. It is useful to
be able to cite a record of monitoring by a LAP and a
period of sobriety.
